![]() Interviews usually take place in the back room of a concert venue or in a tour bus, but they rarely ever take place on a busy sidewalk in downtown Seattle. But Daphne Loves Derby are just simple boys from Kent who don’t seem used to doing interviews yet. They had no qualms about settling down in the middle of a busy pedestrian walkway and were unfazed by the seemingly endless requests for money. Can you guys introduce yourselves as a band? Jason: This is Daphne Loves Derby. My name is Jason and I play the bass guitar. Kenny: I’m Spencer. Well, I’m not Spencer, but I’ll play as him because he doesn’t talk. I’m Spencer and I play guitar. And I’m Kenny and I play guitar and sing. Stu plays the drums, but he isn’t here. How did you guys get together? Jason: We got together on the internet. On I-Chat. We talked to each other and decided that we wanted to jam. Kenny was in a band and Stu and I were in a band, so we made a band and called it Daphne Loves Derby. Are you guys uber internet geeks? Jason: Not really. Kind of. Like 10%? Kenny: I go to the internet for boredom like people go to the TV. Spencer: I like searching on Google.com. Google. Woman: You guys got money? I need to make a phone call. Did production help you guys a lot with your sound on the CD, or did you record in studio before? Kenny: We just made our home demos at home, and we made the EP and album with Casey Bates. Man: Are you fucking serious? Jason: I don’t think it was the production. I think it was just us getting better. We got better at performing. Kenny: Our CD doesn’t have that much production compared to a lot of other CDs. Jason: Bare. Spencer: Rawr! How does being good friends with This Providence and Gatsby’s American Dream influence you? Kenny: Both This Providence and us really look up to Gatsby’s. They’re a really influential band in Seattle. Man: Do you guys have any change? Kenny: Subconsciously, I think This Providence and us influence each other a lot because we spend so much time together. Spencer: We’re like brothers; we’re just a lot alike. Jason: Do you have fifty cents? Dime? Nickel? Did you guys grow up in musical families? Kenny: I grew up in a really musical family. Jason: I think we all did, except for Stu. Stu just has beat programmed into his body. Kenny: Dr. Beatmaster. His dad taps his feet to rhythm when he watches a scary movie. Jason: He really fell in love with military syncopation and he passed it down in his blood. Girl with Cheetos: Do you guys have $5? Kenny: Cheeto puffs are bad for you. They stay in your stomach. Yup. Girl with Cheetos: Not mine. Are you guys here for the show? Kenny: Yeah. Girl with Cheetos: How are you getting back in? Kenny: Well, our friend works here. Do you guys have expectations for this album? Jason: Not really. It already met my expectations and I wasn’t expecting much. t’s good for a band to even have an album out. Kenny: We’re still a small band so we still have to work for a lot of things. We have a lot of high hopes for internet promotion. How did you guys choose Outlook Music? Didn’t you guys have a lot of offers? Kenny: Yeah, we really did. We wanted a label that trusted us and let us do things in our own way. Guy pushing cart: Are you guys having a sit-in? Kenny: Sorry, dude, we’ll get up for you man. Jason: Outlook really gives us flexibility so that we don’t have to do things like every other band. Are there any small bands that you guys think should get more attention? Jason: I’d say This Providence but you already covered them. Kenny: Not really. Spencer: Brand New? Coldplay? Jason: Keanu Reeves? Kenny: What about The Tide? Jason: Probably nothing. Kenny: [pointing at his shirt] Number One Gun. Jason: [pointing at his shirt] Silver Lake Soccer Club. Anything to add? Spencer: Sorry we suck. Jason: Sorry we suck. Kenny: We’re just boys. Spencer: We’re just boy.
