FIGHTING THE INDEPENDENT FIGHT

"... As we neared downtown, this mom and grandma with two little girls got on the bus. The girls were probably around 8 years old. As my stop neared, I pulled the cord, indicating I wanted to get off at the next stop. Right after I pulled the cord, one of the girls whipped her head around, gave me this evil look, and said, 'I waned to do that!' I just said sorry, and this guy said, 'Hey, you snooze, you lose,' which she did not like. So, I'm about to get off the bus, and the little girl clasps onto these bars, swings whole body at my leg, and kicks me! I didn't even know how to respond, so I just walked off the bus." - Elise's story *

"I was sitting on the bus. Across from me, there were two men talking. One had a dog. Obviously the two men had just met on the bus, and the dogless man was quickly losing the other guy's attention. Eyeballing the man's dog, he blurted out, 'So, you ever eat dog?' And the bus got really quiet." - Etsuko's story *

"So, I was on the 44 leaving Ballard and heading towards the U. It was about 3PM and I was sitting on the elevated seats above the tires on an older bus. Below me and to my right was a skater dude listening to some very loud music with headphones. The music was so loud I could hear it across the aisle, two seats back. So I listened in. It was Cindi Lauper's 'True Colors'. I was shocked." - Jay's story *

"It was rush hour, and the bus was standing room only. Around MontLake, I noticed a grey-haired, middle-aged man in a suit sitting up in front. He was seated in the aisle-facing seats directly behind the driver by the handrail. I was two or three seats back facing forward, so I had a great view of the drama that was about to be played out.
"When I first noticed the man, he had a content look on his shaved, over-fed face. Then, he shoved his finger into his nose. I could see it moving around, digging, scraping, searching... He pulled it out and took a second to examine the booger he had just excavated from his nose before sticking it into his mouth. In horror, I watched as he dug around a few more minutes, and then the bus lurched. With his booger fist, he touched the handrail!" - Anonymous *

"I was in an undisclosed part of Seattle at a busy intersection, waiting for the bus. I was standing a little ways away from the shelter where a drunk was arguing with himself. Then, he wipped out his schlong and urinated right on the bench. When the bus came, I told the driver what I had seen and he just said, 'Did you say anything to him?'
