Natalya Hughes‘ current series of works feel subtractive — as though she is actively painting out important portions of existing paintings as opposed to building off of nothing. Hughes always manages to capture a good sense of abstract shape through the use of negative space, and the images below seem to utilize prints of figures in traditional Japanese garb to Hughes’ benefit. The results contain what look like weird, residual phantoms.
