What else is there left to be said about Teenage Fanclub? They’ve influenced more bands than a porcupine has spines. They’ve changed with the times, evolving past the era of grunge and alternative almost effortlessly. And they still can write some amazing pop songs, as evidenced by their 10th release in twenty years, Shadows.
Shadows is no Bandwagonesque, but what is these days? It’s a light, carefree pop-album more on the side of The Byrds or Yo La Tengo than Dinosaur Jr. The charming, Big Star-esque harmonies of “Into the City” are nothing less than expertly done. “Live With The Seasons” floats above the clouds with a gentle waltz and the wind at its back. Shadows is the sound of a band at the top of its game. If you’re at all a fan of exquisite guitar-pop, Teenage Fanclub are probably already one of your favorite bands. At the very least, they’re the band that’s still together.
