Skrot Up Mixtape (#7) Stream & Download

This mixtape should serve as a great introduction to Skrot Up — a label that is constantly releasing artful, challenging electronic, experimental, and psychedelic lo-fi music.

In conjunction with our unofficial house party at SXSW this year (DETAILS HERE), we have invited Skrot Up, a tape label based out of Denmark, to craft a mixtape just for us. This mixtape has songs by three of four Skrot Up-affiliated bands that are playing at our SXSW party and should serve as a great introduction to a label that is constantly releasing artful, challenging electronic, experimental, and psychedelic lo-fi music.

Available in two formats: as one downloadable .zip with all the .mp3 files, or two .mp3s, dividing the mixtape in half.

– Skrot Up would like to thank: all the bands, Free Loving Anarchists (Dr. P in hand), and Young Thomas –

Curated by Morten, of Skrot Up

  1. Tongue And Teeth – “Just Dogs”

Domokos from Future Blondes introduced us to these freaks from S.F. I like the way the hide worming melodies under reels of breathy noise and the guitars run like fingers down chalkboards and echo on with cheese-wire feedback.

  2. The Secret Society Of The Sonic Six – “Bump Sonically Speaking”

The Secret Society of the Sonic Six a.k.a. (((6))) are from L.A. and I hope I’m not stereotyping (too much) by saying that it shows in their music. They make turning film noir snapshots into futuristic electro psychedelia sound so easy.

  3. Balaclavas – “Sick Pants”

I was lucky to see Balaclavas play twice last year at SXSW and they blew me away – twice. They perform mostly around their hometown of Houston, but someone should hook them up with a world tour. Musical chops and restraint is rarely combined so intensely in rock, but Balaclavas have it down.

  4. Rape Faction – “White Boy Uptown”

Rape Faction is a trio from NDG in Montreal. They like totally rock live. This track is from their debut album, titled Gone Forever. Their influences are still somewhat discernable, but the way they mangle them into something that sounds like a derailed train wrecking through a field of newly opened roses shows a lot of promise.

  5. Grem – “Closer”

I have no idea what a Grem is, but it’s very noisy, so I take it that it’s a friendly creature. This track is from their debut tape Esme.

  6. Kid Romance – “Not Your Persona”

Kid Romance drove all the way from Boston to Austin for SXSW last year and played an amazing set at the house we had borrowed for the FLA/Skrot Up/Human Non showcase. Hanging around with them outside, they treated me to some of the best peanut butter I’ve ever tasted. I immediately signed them for a huge contract. That’s how we roll.

  7. Florene – “Capital”

Florene is a duo from Denton, TX and they make dance music the same way some people design characters for a suicide incursion. Their Mind-Surfer release represents Skrot Up’s venture into the “fucked-up rave” genre.

  8. Grave Babies – “Ghost”

Grave Babies are from Seattle and will most likely trick you into dancing to songs about death and human tragedy. The first time we hung out they treated me to some wonderful homemade vegan sausages and we’re putting out their third record pretty soon. Get the picture?

  9. High Marks – “Revenge”

High Marks hails from some place in Georgia. This track is from their Eli Marx cassette. I wouldn’t be surprised if the main man has a photograph of an empty beach stuck to his refrigerator door.

  10. Dharma – “Dark Magicks”

Dharma is a one-woman band currently based in Denton, TX. All the cats in my neighborhood gather around the building I live in when I crank her record. Maybe cats are from the future, too?

  11. Wicked Crafts – “Thought Of A Present”

Wicked Crafts resides in Montreal, but is from a much warmer place originally. I’m not a fan of the inside/outside dichotomy, but his music somehow displays these warm vs. cold sentiments without going too far on the contrast thing.

  12. After After After – “Radiation”

After After After is from Belgium (– or Switzerland, not sure) and another one of those bands I’ve only communicated with through brief messages on the internet. I don’t even know their names, but they told me they emit absorbed radiation at a high intensity. I believe them.

  13. The Darkest Love – “Your Turn”

The Darkest Love teaches English at Catholic girls’ school in the South of France.

  14. Chevalier Avant Garde – “Loss”

Chevalier Avant Garde is a mysterious duo of which little is known. Their music puts me right back in the backseat of my parents’ car, driving home from a vacation in France sometime around the mid-eighties. I had fallen in love with a French girl named Chrystal, and I knew I was never going to see her again.

  15. Puberty – “By A Car”

Puberty has roots in the metropolitan Detroit-area, and musically, I think of them as the equivalent of the quantum mechanical explanation to why birds sing. They produce new music constantly and it just gets better and better. I hope to put out a record with them soon.

  16. Passion Party – “Untitled”

Passion Party: man — myth — friend. Chris was the first to step up and give us hand when we were still dreaming of taking over the world. This track is an early bedroom-recorded demo, awesomely blown out and melancholic — a fitting closure.
