La Dispute – “You And I In Unison”

Wellllllll… it’s not for everyone. But this is a perfect narrative about romantic tragedy, in my opinion… VIVIAN
LA DISPUTE BAND INTERVIEW

La Femme – “Sur La Planche”

Such great surf dance! Mega-sexual (see: album cover) and French. Technically they’re talking about surfing, but I don’t think they’re really talking about surfing. VIVIAN
LA FEMME – LE PODIUM 1 ALBUM REVIEW

Lissie – “Pursuit of Happiness”

I love her spin on this cover. KATIE

Moonface – “Shit-Hawk In The Snow”

God, do I hate the name of this song. “Hyp-hyp-hyp-hypnotize you!” VIVIAN

M83 – “Midnight City”

Dare you to find someone that doesn’t like this song. KATIE

My Goodness – “I’ve Got A Notion”

This noisy blues-punk is the best thing coming out of Seattle right now.
PETER

Nash Smith & Ganges – “California”

This song seriously manages to be the most epic thing by just channeling anger alone, or something. It’s impressive. VIVIAN
NASH SMITH & GANGES – SELF-TITLED ALBUM REVIEW

The Nocturnes – “The Road”

This song just feels like a comforting, all-knowing, sympathetic companion. One of my favorites of the year. VIVIAN
THE NOCTURNES – AOKIGAHARA ALBUM REVIEW

Nurses – “Fever Dreams”

It was really, really hard to decide which track to choose from Dracula, but this one wins because — when was the last time you heard someone squeeze the word “inevitable” into a pop song??? Probably never. VIVIAN
ALBUM OF THE YEAR RUNNER-UP

Objekt- “CLK Recovery”

Huge bass drops, warped synths spiral through hyper space in this massive techno track that threatens to pull body and mind to the outer reaches of unity consciousness. TROY

Other Lives – “For 12”

Indie folk in the world of Bowerbirds. “Tamer Animals” and “Dust Bowl III” are both equally worth a listen. VIVIAN

Phantogram – “Don’t Move”

Can’t wait to see where this band is headed next! KATIE

Prince Rama – “Summer Of Love”

It starts off a bit slow, but once it gets going, it’s clear nobody else is doing what Prince Rama are doing right now. VIVIAN

Red Fang – “Throw Up”

Portland’s beard metal fanatics did it again with a fantastic breakdown in the middle of ths jam.
PETER

Regina – “Unessa”

Cutesy girlie pop is not usually my kind of thing, but this Finnish band is just so damn catchy, and actually make an extremely inaccessible language sound fathomable. VIVIAN

Russian Circles – “Atackla”

“God this is the best Russian Circles track yet,” – Me after every new Russian Circles track.
PETER
ALBUM OF THE YEAR RUNNER-UP

Shabazz Palaces- “An Echo From the Hosts that Profess Infinitum”

Nightmarish hip-hop from the most damaged corners of our lingering childhood fears. TROY
ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Snowman – “White Wall”

Soundtrack to the epic final throes of sanity. This has got to be one of the most beautiful tracks of the year. Get back together, dammit. TROY
ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Thee Oh Sees – “Crack In Your Eye”

I don’t know. This is just my favorite track off Carrion Crawler/The Dream by far. It just lulls me into a brilliant idiotic stupor. VIVIAN
ALBUM OF THE YEAR RUNNER-UP

Toro Y Moi – “New Beat”

A trip back to the past. KATIE
ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Trash Talk – “Awake”

Fierce, dirty, violent, and ready to explode. I’d be this upset if I lived in Sacramento too.
PETER

Twin Sister – “Bad Street”

Another funky party dance track. I guess I wanted to dance this year. JUDY
TWIN SISTER – IN HEAVEN ALBUM REVIEW

tUnE-yArDs – “Bizness”

Another great track accented by an excellent (if not slightly bizarre) music video. As I said in my top album list, Merril Garbus is probably the coolest human being ever. JUDY

Tycho – “Hours”

The beauty lies in the subtle details. VIVIAN

Wild Flag- “Romance”

It was hard to pick a favorite song on this album of many good tracks, but this one stood out in my mind, probably because of how kick ass the music video is. JUDY
ALBUM OF THE YEAR RUNNER-UP

Wugazi – “Sleep Rules Everything Around Me”

Talk about an ultimate mash up. These two albums were made for each other. This song tops the list of great songs. JUDY

Young Circles – “Asthmatic”

This Floridan band is just really, really interesting to me. I simultaneously know exactly where they’re coming from and have noooo idea whatsoever. I like that. VIVIAN
