Top Pops! Deep Time, Shawn Lee, SEAMS MP3 Downloads & Streams

“Pop music shouldn’t always get a bad rap,” says Top Pops!, a recurring selection of pop music highlights across a selection of styles. Austin’s Deep Time get feminist, Shawn Lee has one foot in space and in the ocean, and Seams bring some math into surf.

Deep Time

A few seconds of Austin-based male-female duo Deep Time, and you know that they have a creative fire burning under their asses, and plenty of steez to go around! The contrast between rhythmic basslines of mega low-end satisfaction and the vocals of Jennifer Moore (Voxtrot, The Carrots), which switch between harmoniously playful and erratically yelpy, really carry this shit forth with a swagger and a lean.

The record comes out today, July 10th, via Seattle garage/rock imprint Hardly Art. Miss Moore also wrote an essay commenting on an intentionally sexist (in the name of humor that was cursed upon some and entertained by others) review in Vice Magazine. See it HERE.

SEAMS

Jumping backwards in time a bit with “BOOMER” and “Opossum” from Perth band SEAMS! In the music video for “BOOMER”, fluttering male-female vocals and Afro guitar tones are paired with luscious beachside attractions and word associations, to create a sun-baked good time for all. Any band that can describe their own music as “Marsupial Surf / Imaginary Film Theme” and “Mathpop surf” — and be right about it — gets my vote. Additional tracks of theirs can be seen at their Soundcloud, HERE.

Shawn Lee

This track by Shawn Lee turns the universe topsy-turvy in the grooviest possible way as surf rock and space rock join hands. It’s like Silver Surfer glittered up a tad, or underwater divers in space suits with bellbottomed legs and cowbells in hand. “Head Up” is psychedelic juuuuuuuuuuuuuust enough, dancey juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut enough, and synthesizer nerdy juuuuuuuuuuuuuust enough for even the layest of laymen to have fun.

Synthesizers In Space comes out on vinyl today and via CD/digital on July 24 through ESL Music. Full tour dates below.

Searching Skies (2017) touches on Syrian refugee resettlement in the United States; with it, they helped co-organize The Seventh Art Stand, a national film and civil rights discussion series against Islamophobia. Reckless Spirits (2022) is a metaphysical, multi-lingual POC buddy comedy for a bleak new era, in anticipation of a feature-length project.

Vee is passionate about cultural space, the environment, and finding ways to covertly and overtly disrupt oppressive structures.
