about redefine magazine

WE ARE HONEST.
In May 2004, REDEFINE was born from the reality that sometimes extremely talented people are overlooked while less talented people take the spotlight. Since then, the music industry has changed significantly and tons of blogs and magazines have popped up on the internet, but we have stayed true through the years by ignoring genres and covering individuals we collectively think are talented and deserving of attention. We are not hype machines unless the hype is warranted. You'll see that our coverage is pretty limited; we are selective and don't give coverage to anyone and everyone just to appease labels, bands, or publicists.

WE ARE DEMOCRATIC.
All of our writers provide input on the artists they feel should be highlighted, and this collaborative spirit helps REDEFINE grow as a robust publication that covers niche subgenres. As a result, our coverage is equal-opportunity, and we cover a large number of submissions that are mailed to us by relative nobodies. Many musicians and artists have seen their first bit of press in our magazine, and we are proud of that fact.

general

How is REDEFINE pronounced?
The name of our magazine is REDEFINE, which is pronounced, ree-dee-fine, kids! Not Redefined or Redifine or even Ready-Fine (yes, that is an actual pronunciation someone has used). "Redefine" is actually not a word in all dictionaries, and the reason is because these dictionaries are lame and are not hip to the jive of our existence. "Redefine" is, in essence, to "define again" aka... re-define. The name of the publication was originally inspired by the Incubus song, "Redefine." Regardless of your thoughts on Incubus, you should still check out the song's lyrics here.

Can we send you items for review?
Please, stop asking! Just review our Submission Guidelines and submit, already! (Although if you are asking, you are probably not reading this FAQ and are probably just arbitrarily firing emails off anyway.)

Do you prefer digital submissions over physical ones?
Yes, overwhelmingly. We cannot stress it enough. Please see our Submission Guidelines to see how many other ways we can state this same idea (Applicable to music, art, and film.)

Do you cover literature or writing?
No.

How do I become a REDEFINE writer?
1) Decide if you really believe in our magazine's mission and methods of operation, both of which you can read about above;
2) Familiarize your mind with the prospect of receiving little to no pay for your services;
3) Mail your interests, musical tastes, writing samples, and cover letter to letters@redefinemag.com;
4) Wait for us to respond!

How do I become a REDEFINE photographer?
We currently are not in need of photographers, unless you are a photographer who can also write (in which case, you will find direction in the previous question).

Are you still a printed magazine?
We've ceased regular printings as of 2010, but will have occasional limited run issues. Back copies are available at MagCloud.com and in our store.

music

What are my chances of being covered in your magazine?
This is wholly circumstantial and not at all scientific or predictable! Coverage depends largely on what types of submissions we are receiving at any given time. Essentially, different writers cover different niche markets. If we are receiving a lot of post-rock albums, for example, and all of our writers who cover post-rock albums are busy covering post-rock albums, your chances of [timely] coverage will be lower. We are arranged in such a manner because it would be silly to have a pop-punk wizard covering post-rock albums, naturally.

What kind of music do you cover?
We currently only cover rock music and closely-related genres, such as electronic rock and hip-hop with rock instrumentation. It's a loosely-defined line, though, so when in doubt, send us a submission. We'll let you know if you create music that we are unlikely to cover. And if that is the case, apologies in advance.

Do you review demos?
No. Never.

Do you review EPs?
Sometimes, but they are often given shorter reviews.

Do you only cover independent music?
No. We do cover major label releases from time to time, but they are infrequent and represent a very small percentage of our coverage.

Why are you giving independent musicians negative reviews?
Despite the fact that REDEFINE was created to help support the independent music and art community, our support is not blind or devoid of honesty. We do not give high marks to every independent artist that comes our way solely on the basis of his or her independent affiliation; that list would be never-ending and coverage like that would just be crazy. That being said, it's important to keep in mind that this is a magazine, and opinions are opinions. The opinions of our writers are not all-knowing or infallible. They do not necessarily represent the publication as a whole, but they are not necessarily unfounded, either. But if you doubt our sincerity, just check out the list of musicians we've covered who have self-released their music, and keep in mind that list doesn't even include releases on independent labels.

art

What are the chances of my art being covered in your magazine?
Let's just say we're a lot pickier about art coverage than we are about music coverage, because we don't negatively cover art. We only cover the best materials that get sent our way, so your chances of your art being covered are pretty low. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try, though!

film

Do you review short films aka film shorts?
Yes, we do. Send us a copy to our PO Box or a web link if you have one.

What are my chances of my film being covered in your magazine?
Probably about 50/50.
