I Think I’ve Found My New Favorite Website.

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Yesterday, someone clued me into Broken Picture Telephone, and I think it’s now my new favorite website. Remember playing Telephone as a kid? Remember how convoluted simple ideas got? Now imagine Telephone in visual form. Now imagine Telephone in visual DIGITAL form, and you have Broken Picture Telephone. Nothing short of genius. See an example below that made me literally laugh out loud. Many more gems where this came from. Go sign up and play!

An All-Female Showing That’ll Incite The Mountains And Hills To Burst Into Song, No Doubt.

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Talk about an epic name for a show! One of my favorite galleries in Portland, Oregon, the Together Gallery, has an opening tonight for a show entitled The Mountains And Hills Will Burst Into Song. Featuring new works and installations by Anja Verdugo, Julianna Swaney, Rebecca Artemisa Urias, and Sarah McNeil, the show will be an all-female showcase of artwork that would feel right at home in a woodsy children’s book. Expect delicately-drawn lines, largely muted colors, and a hefty portion of animal art.

A largely black-and-white drawing by Sarah McNeil (minus the hearty nipple!).

Rebecca Artemis Aurias’ wicked mountain, which she describes on her Flickr account, saying, “traveling with little peb to calm the wicked mountain spirits with the milksweet moths.”

Juliana Swaney’s Foxhat, drawing doesn’t mess around; it tells it like it is. It’s a fox hat.

Work In Zion National Park — At The Government’s Expense!

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Application deadline for this amazing potential offer just got extended to November 7th, 2009, which gives you about a week to get your stuff prepared! For an application fee of just $35, you might have the opportunity to hop onto this and work in the desert for two separate sessions in 2010.

Oh yes, you could work here!

The Zion National Park Artist in Residence program offers professional artists the opportunity to live and work in the majestic desert environment of southern Utah for a period of one month.

This call applies to two different sessions, the first being February 6-March 6, 2010 and the second being April 1 - April 30, 2010.

The works completed under this program will contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of Zion National Park and should reflect the National Park Service’s mission to the preservation and protection of the park’s cultural and natural resources.

During the Residency period the artist will be expected to present two public programs, tailored to an individual’s medium, interest, and experience. At the conclusion of the Residency, participating artists will donate an original piece from their Residency in Zion National Park to be placed in the Park’s permanent collection.

Zion National Park will work in conjunction with faculty and staff at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, UT to select artists who will work in Zion for a four-week period in February 2010 and April 2010. Selected artists will be given a rent-free, furnished park house in the eastern section of the park.

For more details about this program or to download application materials, visit www.NPS.gov/Zion.

Buy The Label 228 Street Art Project Book!

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

We wrote about this more than two years ago, but it’s about time for a refresher!

Once upon a time, artist Camden Noir came up with a community street art idea. Dubbed the Label 228 Project, the idea encouraged any artist to draw, paint, sketch, collage, or otherwise put their imprint on the free priority mail stickers one can find at any local branch of the U.S. Post Office.

Street artists from around the world participated, and after months upon months of shopping around to look for an independent publisher, Noir and his project were finally picked up by Soft Skull Press. Full color and glossy from cover to cover, the book is like a street art rendition of PostSecret, featuring over 1,500 labels from over 500 artists — including Zoso, Matt Linares, Mecro, Mat Curran, and Daniel Fleres, to name a few. Artists formerly written about in REDEFINE who make an appearance in the book include Aaron Kraten, Max Kauffman, and Parskid. You can now buy the book on Amazon.com!

Robert Hardgrave’s Plexus.

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Seattle and Redefine favorite Robert Hardgrave unveiled a brand new piece at the Flatcolor Gallery last month, entitled Plexus. Here’s the amazing piece, in case you missed it last month. If you thought Hardgrave was impressive before, this piece of work only further shows his growth as an imaginative artistic technician.

Punch Gallery Puts A Spin On Fundraising!

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Count on the Punch Gallery to do something different for fundraising. Instead of taking the traditional route of silent auctions and car washes and the like, the good folks behind the Punch Gallery are doing a “Winner Takes All” fundraiser. What that means: one lucky winner will win the entire October collection of works on display at the gallery. The show starts on First Thursday, aka tonight.

The contest is limited to 1,000 entries, so it’s not impossible to win, and there are three methods of entry. Two cost money. One doesn’t.

You can donate $10 to the gallery online via PayPal to receive an entry. You can stop by the gallery, check out the works, and donate $10 to receive an entry. You can receive one FREE entry by doing an original drawing and mailing it to the good folks of Punch Gallery (see complete details on their website at http://www.punchgallery.org/sweepstakes/#).

One winner will receive thirteen original works, and the prize will be awarded in a random drawing. An approximate value of $7,157.00! Holy shit!

Here are some of the things YOU might be able to win:

Howard Barlow’s From Good Stock features a cute little ol’ bunny rabbit on a rifle stock. How bout that for a great addition to your living room wall?

Continuing on with the Western theme, Justin Colt Beckman’s Untitled (John Wayne) features a digital collage of the artist’s face on a found photo.

Unicörn Fledermäus is a watercolor, pencil, and magic rendition of a fictional animal created by Justin Gibbens.

And sure, all the works are certainly thematically divergent, but they all match very well… making a potentialy great suite of additions to your home, your office, your whatever. Visit their website to find out more!
