Ben Weiner’s Material And Illusion.

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Enveloping oil paintings and stop-motion videos constitute the bulk of Ben Weiner’s current solo show at Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Material And Illusion, the show is only running through July 3rd, 2010, so please catch this minimalistic, abstract breath of fresh air while you still can.

(Note of interest: rather than writing out his materials in layman’s terms, Weiner opts to use chemical names, adding to the whole illusion for the show. An example of materials used in his work: C3H8O2, H2O, NaC18H36O2, C9H10O2, C28H20N2Na2O8S2.)

Below are screen shots from his video clips:

Lynne Wood @ Greg Kucera Gallery.

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

These graphite works by Lynne Wood are a little more than meets the eye. On the surface, they seem like nothing more randomly-oriented lines on paper, but when seen in respective to one another, it soon becomes obvious that each piece is carefully measured and actually has underlying concepts governing its creation. All of the works in this series have some connection to each other, although it may not see apparent at first.

The show opens tomorrow for First Thursday, and is now on display at Greg Kucera Gallery through August 14th, 2010.

Jarmo Mäkilä’s Creepers. [NSFW]

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Finnish artist Jarmo Mäkilä has some creepy artwork, but in the most subtle of ways. They’re creepy because they often depict human beings tromping around, completely oblivious to all of the animals around them that are lazing around, having sex, and climbing trees. I’m rather unclear as to what Mäkilä’s paintings mean, but I gather it’s a still, lonely world his characters are living in.

Holy Moley, Ariana Page Russell Is Losing Face.

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Almost missed this show by Ariana Page Russell, who works taking photographs of skin.

“How can that possibly be interesting?” you ask?

Judging by the description, I would have imagined some kind of macro biological photography analysis of skin, but Russell’s photographs of skin are just as much about the human being their stuck onto than the skin itself. Her work is conceptually creative and visually engrossing.

This show at Platform Gallery (114 Third Avenue S, Seattle, WA) closes out tomorrow, so catch it quickly!

Million Dollar Designs On Subway Art.

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Full disclosure: these images are taken from Juxtapoz. They happened to write about something that was a little too cool to pass up, so here it is: subway art designs by Million Dollar Design to breathe some womanly life into stale subway cars.
