Mark Dean Veca Combines Pattern & Street Art

Friday, August 27th, 2010

I really like what Brooklyn artist Mark Dean Veca is doing with himself. He takes poppy street art characters and combines them with intricate patterns and ornamentation to create some large, pretty raw illustrations that kind of make it feel like you’re residing within someone’s innards.

Beyond that even, though, he has some pretty creative installation works under his belt, and his ability to transform space into an unreal cartoon domain is commendable.

Snag Some Bigfoot Works From Flatcolor Gallery

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

As of today, you have one more week left to snag some Bigfoot pieces from Flatcolor Gallery (528 First Avenue South, Seattle, WA) — lucky you! Snatch ‘em up while you still can! The full-color painted pieces are not cheap, but I don’t imagine they’ll get any cheaper anytime soon. Luckily, there’s some diversity in this show so that those with less funds can still -somewhat- afford a Bigfoot original.

Million Dollar Designs On Subway Art.

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Full disclosure: these images are taken from Juxtapoz. They happened to write about something that was a little too cool to pass up, so here it is: subway art designs by Million Dollar Design to breathe some womanly life into stale subway cars.

Gaia at Irvine Contemporary Gallery

Monday, June 14th, 2010

It often seems that something is lost when street artists show in gallery settings, but this  Irvine Contemporary show from Brooklyn based street artist Gaia is a welcome example of a successful transition from canvas-as-wall to canvas-on-wall.

Brusse Injects Love Into The Present By Recalling The Past.

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Creating street art installations is one thing, but Brusse is turning a lot of his art installations inwards — into kitchens, bedrooms, and living rooms. With a series called Love Injections, Brusse takes carefully-planned messages of love and sprinkles them into everyday domestic settings, personalizing street art and showing his close relationship with the messages he’s trying to convey. While his art is somewhat revealing, it is his biography that is the most revealing about his works. See the excerpt below.

2009 It is over with my girlfriend?¿?¿ Learned that love has a lot of sides which are hidden for our eyes.
Learned so much more. I lost one of the most beautiful person of my life… but life continous and positivity is the message!
Negativity is not even an option. We are still in contact. She will always be one of the most important persons in my life.
Now I am living things I otherwise never would have lived if it hadn’t be for the 2009 love story.
Future Love (analyzing the past).

If it takes an individual who is intense about love to create this kind of art, so be it. This stuff would maybe be a little bit creepy… if it wasn’t just so damn adorable and creative.

Visit his website to see more works, as the website not only has a lot of interesting reading material, but images of many, many more interesting projects as well. Spread the love!

Aakash Nihalani Can Do Things With Tape Most People Have Never Considered.

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

In a couple days, street artist Aakash Nihalani will be featuring his tape art in an enclosed space (The Carmichael Gallery).

Nihalani will be creating site-specific installations using brightly-colored tape, proving that simple geometric 2-dimensional shapes, when placed into 3-dimensional settings, can challenge viewers’ perceptions and spatial understandings.

Below are examples of his non-gallery work:

BUT.
As if that wasn’t ridiculous enough, the show will also feature works from Mark Jenkins. Yes, MARK JENKINS!

“Who the hell is Mark Jenkins?” you ask? Maybe some photos will enlighten you, because chances are, you’ve seen his works on the internet a million times but never knew the name that went with them. Now, you do.

And now you know why you need to go if you live in the Los Angeles area. You’d be a fool not to.
