De Oro, Indeed.

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Just wanted to share this small documentary by LNY, which takes video of everyday life in Cuenca, Ecuador, and what it looks like interspersed with images of LNY’s work. It shows, in a quite literal fashion, the figures and events which helped inspire his not-as-literal street art pieces. New color in an already colorful landscape.

Support Our New Mystics Pals — No Touching Ground, NKO & Dan Hawkins

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Seattle street artists No Touching Ground, NKO, and Dan Hawkins crafted a tomb project last year, which was a “case study in the archeology of memory.”

CLICK HERE TO READ JEN GRAVES’ ARTICLE IN THE STRANGER ABOUT THE PROJECT.

That particular project was a bit hidden to the public, but the three artists now want to work together with the ever-supportive 4culture to recreate this installation in a way that is accessible and open to the public. The New Mystics were previously behind projects like the Bridge Motel, the Belmont, Moore: Inside Out, and the Corner: 23rd & Union, so if you enjoyed those pieces of public art, please think about donating to their Kickstarter campaign. The goal is to collect $2,000 for the public installation, which will be made live on April 4th, 2011 at Gallery 4Culture (101 Prefontaine Place S., Seattle, WA).

Greg Boudreau’s Subtle Stencils

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

It’s always a pleasure to see stencils used in unorthodox ways, and Seattle artist Greg Boudreau provides some stunning examples of just how versatile the medium can be. Greg works predominantly on salvaged wood, and he manages to get some extremely detailed and unexpected atmospheric effects out of medium not usually known for its delicacy.

Artifakt Stencil Show!

Friday, December 10th, 2010

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve written about an event Seattle collective Artifakt, but it’s good to see that they’re still going strong by throwing parties which blend music and art.

On December 10th, they’ll be holding a multi-genre show at LO-FI, which will have DJs (Flave, Hanibal, Jonny Foreskin, Flat & Furious) as well as artists Wakuda, Grym, 179, and Urban Soule. Take a sneak peak by checking out 179′s work, below… (not the best photos, but you know. That’s why you should go see her work in person.)

It’s $5. 21+. Get there.

Ericailcane’s Amazing Book (And Show At Upper Playground)

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

A while back I stumbled upon the most amazing book in the entire world. Leonardo Ericailcane is mostly known for his large scale street art antics, but his works on paper are equally impressive in an entirely different way. In his book Potente Di Fuoco, Ericailcane takes all of the drawings from his childhood and redraws them 20 years later. It’s a brilliant idea (I admit I desperately wish I had come up with it), and the images really speak for themselves.

Also, Ericailcane is currently showing at Upper Playground in San Francisco. He painted a sweet new mural for the occasion. Show runs through December 19th.

First Thursday: Seattle, WA – Dec. 2nd, 2010

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Seattle’s First Thursday is massive; here are some selections from some galleries we regularly enjoy. And, can I just say? Seattle is really rockin and rollin this month, with tons of really excellent and innovative exhibitions. We just did the post for Portland’s First Thursday, and Seattle’s is making Portland’s look like child’s play.

Don’t mind Maki Tamura; she’s just killing it, as always. She just knows all too well how to incorporate vintage imagery and intricate, lace-like detail into her mixed media works. Her precision is wonderful, and her works have evolved to become more brilliantly composed than ever. This show also features an installation by Tamura. She deserves her own post. It will come soon.

Chris Engman creates sculptures, often from found industrial objects, and photographs them. The pictures say it all, and all of these prints are limited edition.

Seattle street artist Baso Fibonacci gets busy with his solo show. There isn’t a preview on Flatcolor Gallery’s website just yet, but it’ll be a good one.

I’m not entirely sure what this gallery is about, but this is a group show of “mixfixed” toys, and hell, the show is called Frippery, Bibelot, and a little sugar for the homeless. Like, seriously, it’s a benefit show. See the flyer.

Mark Koven is going to have a multi-disciplinary installation featuring new media works that will somehow find a way to incorporate all of the following: “science and sociology converged with sculpture, physical computing, film, photography, sound and performance.” This is an installation that needs to be seen to be understood. Here’s more quotes from Punch Gallery about it:

“… he takes inspiration from the life of the French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Falling into the Sky focuses on the “essential” as experienced through the merging of a child and adult’s perspectives. Utilizing such materials as bubbles, sound, electronics and wind turbines, the work in the exhibition will also highlight Koven’s fascination with the natural and manmade facets of flight. Included in the exhibition is an interactive piece titled Draw me a Sheep. This work recalls the moment in Le Petit Prince when the main character of the book and the downed aviator first meet. As he approaches the pilot, he asks, “Draw me a Sheep.” What follows in the book is a dialogue that speaks towards Ferdinand de Saussure’s philosophy on Semiotics. As with their conversation, so happens with the voice recognition software in the piece, it listens but makes mistakes transcribing what is actually spoken.”

This is one of three exhibitions going on at La Familia Gallery this month, and features the etched, whimsical works of Mirka Hokkanen. Think fuzzy, lovely woodland creatures.
