But unlike some events that follow a similar model, CMJ is still a great place to begin scouting out up-and-coming bands before they make it big. With enough room to stretch their wings and enough competition to want to work hard, bands playing CMJ are forced to put on put on some of their best shows in some of the tiniest spaces. In our complete CMJ guide, we highlight an array of shows, mostly in the pop and electronic realms, and provide easy listening stations for the best ones so you can decide within seconds if a show is right for you.

Psychic Twin

Tuesday, October 16th @ Piano’s
I was lucky enough to catch this duo last year at CMJ by happy accident. The duo was charmingly lo-fi but they had enough spark to electrify the jaded Brooklyn crowd with their sweet Mates of State-influenced tunes. - JUDY NELSON

Physical Therapy

Wednesday, October 17 @ Public Assembly
Physical Therapy, aka producer/DJ Daniel Fisher, released EP Safety Net to positive reviews in June. Distilling old rave beats with jazz and ambient percussion, and sometimes adding floating samples or vocals, the sound he creates addictive and impressive. - DEVORAH KLEIN LEV-TOV

Poolside

Saturday, October 20th @ Gramercy Theatre
The band basically spells out relaxation with their name choice. Their music videos and album art reiterate that fact; the video for their song “Slow Down” is perfectly California cool. - JUDY NELSON

Saturday, October 20th @ Gramercy Theatre
What the world needs is more blurry, sludgy electro in the vein of Tobacco. The NJ-based producer put out his debut Galactic Melt (very brain-melting) in 2011, and released In Decay, an album of previously un-released material, this year. - JUDY NELSON

With a similar vibe to Beach Fossils, Ducktails, and other bands on the Woodsist label, Murals’ 2012 debut On a Passing Cloud has a ‘60s rock feel that is infectious. If you catch them live this year, you’ll probably be one of the first. - JUDY NELSON

Debo Band

Thursday, October 18th @ Knitting Factory
Furthering the cause of bringing international music to indie rock fans, Debo Band is playing CMJ. An 11-member band playing Afro-pop-rock, the band has toured all over the world for the past seven years, playing on diverse stages at the Ethiopian Music Festival, Lincoln Center, and even Webster Hall. Their self-titled debut album came out this year and heavily features Danny Mekonnen and vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. (They’re playing at Knitting Factory on Thursday October 18th for CMJ, but if you have a badge, I would call the venue ahead of time.
Sudden Weather Change

It doesn’t take long to notice that Sudden Weather Change are influenced by the angst of ’90s rock. They have a youthful sound full of grinding guitars and tempo changes. There are times where their music also brings to mind bands that you’d find on Polyvinyl Records such as American Football and Braid. It is common for their songs have loud bursts of passions at times, while other songs convey a more introverted melancholy mood. With that combination, you can expect a booming and complex live show. - KARLA HERNANDEZ

DIIV make music that you’d expect from a band on Captured Tracks, and considering that the band was started by Zachary Cole Smith, who plays guitar in Beach Fossils, the hazy songs make sense. However, the song compositions carry a tempo kick that makes the band stand out and engages listeners a bit more than most bands of this genre. Instead of sticking to an aesthetic that seems completely worn out, the music has a touch of sunshine and crispness, sort of like the moment on a foggy day when the fog starts to dissolve. - KARLA HERNANDEZ

Born Ruffians

Saturday, October 20th @ Piano’s
This band caught my ear with their debut Red, Yellow, and Gold on Warp in 2008. They followed up with an equally impressive sophomore album that only made a small ripple.
Thursday, October 18th @ Irvine Plaza
Atlanta hip-hop in old-school fashion, Killer Mike has a message and manages to shout it above all of the din. His intelligent lyrics, riffs on Reagan, and musings on hip-hop in general made his 2011 album R.A.P. Music a huge hit. I saw him live over the summer opening for El-P and he impressed me.
Niki & The Dove

WRITTEN BY JUDY NELSON

With their debut album Instinct recently released in the US, Niki & the Dove were an apt opener for Twin Shadow. Lead singer Malin Dahlström is reminiscent of a modern Cyndi Lauper, while also showing serious deference to fellow Swedish indie star Karin Dreijer of The Knife. Gothic and quirky in the same beat, Dahlström had strong stage presence and a powerful voice to back up what might be construed as overly dramatic dance moves. Keyboardist and guitarist Gustaf Karlöf was a solid but quiet presence, contributing the occasional vocal and any extra instrumentation, ranging from the Maracas to the rarely-seen-live Chinese hand drum, the Bolang Gu (波浪鼓).

SEE FULL LIVE SHOW REVIEW

The band was much more impressive live than we imagined from our listens of the album, which sounded like a rather commonplace synthy dance record. Dahlström called up a kind of Stevie Nicks-esque attire, complete with glowing feather fans. She really sold it, and the music was upbeat, fun, and relevant. Something about it screamed Prince, or even a Prince-Fleetwood Mac hybrid, minus the sexed-up dance moves. She did inspire gentle swaying and beyond from the audience, especially during their more recognizable songs like “Last Night” and “DJ, Ease My Mind.” Endearingly European, both Dahlström and Karlöf were beyond thankful for the crowd’s attention, and very happy to be opening for Twin Shadow, especially in Williamsburg. Very fun live, the band promised to return to the US for more tours over the next year.

Twin Shadow

WRITTEN BY DEVORAH LEV-TOV

With a rabid fan base far beyond what we had imagined, <strnog>Twin Shadow‘s main man, George Lewis, Jr., was very clearly the focus of the show. Much screaming ensued when he appeared on stage with Niki & The Dove, and it was all the more deafening when he walked out for his set with Twin Shadow. He showed much love for Brooklyn (and much disdain for Manhattan, Boston, and LA, even though LA is where he makes his home now), which inspired even more cheering. And it was deserved: he played a great, energetic set, with a perfect mix of songs from his beautiful debut Forget, and his newest, Confess.

The set began with a ballad, as Lewis took the stage alone and sang a moving rendition of “The One.” But soon the party started, as his band joined him onstage and launched into “When We’re Dancing.” Favorites like “Slow,” “Golden Light” and “Five Seconds” inspired intense adoration and dancing from the audience and it was obvious the band was having a great time as well. Very personable, Lewis cajoled the crowd into screaming at the top of their lungs to start off “At My Heels,” which then triggered the release of a waterfall of black and gold balloons from the ceiling. Note to bands: adding balloons to your set means instant drama and fun!

Twin Shadow’s 11-song set ended with “When the Movie’s Over” and “Forget”, bringing the mood down a few notches before the band left the stage to let the crowd shout it out for an encore.

Said encore began with the hauntingly beautiful “Castles in the Snow”, and then Lewis asked Niki & The Dove to join them onstage, thanking them for being such great tourmates. The band then played the familiar opening notes of Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure,” transforming the venue into a joyful dance party that left the crowd buzzing for several minutes after everyone left the stage.

Braids

(Thursday, 10/21, M For Montreal Showcase, Arlene’s Grocery)
Hailing from Montreal, Braids played on Thursday night at the M For Montreal showcase at Arlene’s Grocery. They blew me away with their art rock style and use of vocals as instruments, although their songs do have intelligible lyrics. They created a lush soundscape using lots of pedals, mixing boards, and loops, as well as creative methods like licking their lips and blowing into the mic. Their debut album will be out in January on K9 Records.
www.myspace.com/braidsmusic

The Luyas

(Thursday, 10/21, M For Montreal Showcase, Arlene’s Grocery)
For several songs, lead singer Jessie Stein busted out the Moodswinger, a 12-string electric zither designed by the Dutch experimental luthier Yuri Landman. Pietro Amato made good use of the French horn, sometimes blowing into the wide end for an echo-y effect. They also used some creative DIY lighting, employing simple naked lightbulbs screwed onto boards around the stage that were flashed at various times. Their set was energetic and catchy, and it is obvious this band has big things coming up in the near future.
www.theluyas.com

First Aid Kit

(Thursday, 10/21, The Delancey)
The two sisters from Sweden, known as First Aid Kit, made a huge impact on the audience at the Delancey on Thursday night. While they initially had to shush some people talking in the back, they soon had everyone’s rapt attention with a mic-less version of “Ghost Town” that I’m pretty sure gave everyone chills. They did employ a drummer on most of their songs, which gave them a fuller sound, including on their now famous cover of Fleet Foxes’ “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song.” Many of their song motifs are old timey and antiquated, about courage and honesty and long ago periods, much like The Decemberists’ lyrical themes. With titles like “I Met Up With A King” and “The Lion’s Roar” and the utilization of a harpsichord, their sound is rather old fashioned in a way — and I mean that as a positive. Definitely a band to watch in 2011.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

(Saturday, 10/23, Brooklyn Vegan, Public Assembly)
These guys from Detroit played a bunch of shows, but I didn’t catch them until Saturday afternoon. The eager crowd was in good spirits for the middle of the day, and Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott did not disappoint. With Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. donning trucker caps and wearing full-on Nascar uniforms (sponsored by Cheerios and Lysol) I was expecting a somewhat gritty, hipster sound, but when the vocals came through, they were beautiful; it was obvious these guys had talent. Songs like “Simple Girl” and “Nothing But Your Love” are not what you’d expect from these dudes, but either way, they are excellent.
<a href=http://www.daleearnhardtjrjr.com" target="new">www.daleearnhardtjrjr.com

Active Child

(Saturday, 10/23, Pitchfork #Offline Festival, Brooklyn Bowl)
Active Child is the band of “choirboy-turned-indie pop musician, Pat Grossi,” according to his website. Inexplicably, he only played one show during CMJ. Grossi’s choral training became apparent as soon as he opened his mouth, with vocals ranging from high highs to low lows. He alternately played a small harp and keyboard, and he had someone playing bass, with drumbeats coming from a computer. Songs like “Wilderness” and “She Was A Vision” were lush and ethereal, with Grossi’s Tears for Fears and Joy Division influences clear. Not only was Grossi’s voice extremely graceful, but even the way he hunched over the keyboard was elegant and fluid. His EP, Curtis Lane, is out now and I expect big things from him in 2011.
www.activechildmusic.com

Matthew Dear

(Saturday, 10/23, Pitchfork #Offline Festival, Brooklyn Bowl)
Matthew Dear unleashed his dark side with his latest release, Dark City. He played a good amount of shows at CMJ, including some that were exclusive and hard to get into. I finally caught him on Saturday. He looked dashing in his full tuxedo, while his bandmates just wore the jackets. Their noir look went perfectly with the heavy and dense music, especially with “You Put A Smell on Me,” which beckons the listener for a ride in his “big black car.” Dear’s latest incarnation is quite a change from 2007′s Asa Breed, which was much more bubbly and poppy, but his signature dance beats are still there, and the hips were still swaying at the show.

das racist

This hip-hop duo took the internet by force and drilled their single, “Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell,” into thousands (perhaps millions) of heads repeatedly, and deservedly so. Not for a long time has hip-hop sounded this fresh, interesting, intellectual, and relevant. Check out their free mixtape on their website before seeing them live at CMJ. You’ll have many chances to see them live, too; they are playing at least 5 shows. -JN

Despite having a personal connection to the band (they slept on the floor of my tiny apt one CMJ years ago), I thoroughly enjoy their brand of synth-dance rock. They were signed to the fated Stolen Transmission label, and put out one release in 2007. I am hoping that their CMJ appearance will revive them into another album! -JN
