“Several months before the request to make a video for ‘Set It Off’ came through, I’d shot some test footage of a friend pole dancing, and loved the look of it… there was definite sexiness to it, but the potential to add a bit of class to the depiction of beautiful, strong women showing off their skills.” – Ryan Staake, Director

A reminder that the world wide web is a wonderful, indulgent piece of technology, you can now stream all six episodes of the television series Marc. Originally airing in 1977, Marc is the pop music show of Marc Bolan, the famed glam rocker whose life was taken in a car crash in the same year the series ran. Featuring a rather glossed over Bolan lip syncing and dancing around stage to his own tunes, it’s a sort of macabre look at an artist not only entering the final days of his career, but of his life too. Marc’s final episode, which features guest star David Bowie performing “Heroes” and a duet with Bolan, actually failed to air until after Bolan’s [...]

“‘The Wheel’ was written about The Wheel of Fortune Tarot card, so when we were thinking of a concept for the video, [band member] Rafael [Fauria] suggested that we literally reproduce the tarot card in video form.” – Honey Owens

Flying Lotus has just released a short film to promote his upcoming record, Until The Quiet Comes, and we feature it below, along with an oldie but equally goodie — Shabazz Palaces’ short film for their 2011 record, Black Up. See both videos after the jump. Flying Lotus Director Kahlil Joseph has put together a nearly 4-minute-long short film that begins with haunting images of violence upon urban youth. That destruction, though, soon turns into liberation via dance and resurrection, with three tracks from Flying Lotus — “See Thru To U”, “Hunger”, and “Getting There”, that feature Niki Randa and Erykah Badu — providing a female-driven backdrop that hints towards the possibility of second chances and better decisions. Until [...]

“In a self-reflexive case of life truly imitating art, I conceptualized an ode to the often solitary, sacrificial existence of devoting one’s every waking moment towards a craft.” - ELY

Everything the rainbow light touches in this music video for Onuinu’s “Ice Palace” turns to psychedelic flourish and ethereal whimsy. A lack of contrast and many a post-production effect create a piece that is half sensual and half digitized, a well-paired visual aid for Onuinu’s music, which possesses those same qualities. Director Andrew Sloan and choreographer Jin Camou discuss the visual decisions and the mentality that led to the final creation of “Ice Palace”, in the following Q&A. Onuinu’s “Ice Palace” will also be featured at REDEFINE magazine’s Motion & Movement In Music Video panel at Bumbershoot and MusicfestNW 2012. SEE FULL DETAILS “This is a very sexy song. The images are meant to combine to create a visual aphrodisiac [...]

The music video for tUnE-yArDs’ “Bizness” fluttered through the internet as a colorful extension of main lady Merrill Garbus’ long-standing style of bridging movement, geometric facepaint, and playful insanity. It was Garbus’ first video to reach the extreme masses, and it, along with the music video for “My Country”, were directed by San Francisco’s Mimi Cave. They are both exercises in give and take between dancer and creator, and spontaneity and choreography, and both give young children the opportunity to participate in a professional art project. In the Q&A below, Cave speaks with REDEFINE about the creative process behind the videos, and we take a look backwards at the role of movement in tUnE-yArDs music videos through the years. The [...]

Animal Collective go Chinese opera face paint and Burning Man desert warriors in this new perfromance art video. Directed by long-time collaborator Danny Perez, this video for “Today’s Supernatural” comes off the collective’s new album, Centipeze Hz, which will come out September 3rd. The track sees the band pulling back from dreamy sonics and into driving, forward-moving territory, and all brutality is powered by fleshy pianos David Cronenberg could find pride in, disconnected arms, and 3D color offsets. This video will have you scratching your hoary head, at the very least. Tomorrow night, August 19th, Animal Collective will premiere Centipede Hz LIVE on Animal Collective Radio (radio.myanimalhome.net). Details, tour dates, and music video after the jump.

Liars further the weirdness of their new record, WIXIW, with this insanely bizarre — even for them — music video for “Brats”. Animated by Ian Cheng, this is 3-D animation at some of its most crass; Elmer Fudd (?), Bugs Bunny (?), and a dumb dog rave to Liars’ house beats while humping one another and bumping into Liars themselves. My favorite parts come towards the end, when Bugs (?) seems to be humping just about everything in sight and does backwards and forwards somersaults atop Elmer (?) like a gymnast on crack (!)! Equally good is when Liars start getting down themselves. Spasms and rag doll effects galore! This is disturbing genius! Below the jump, you will find further [...]
