“A lot of the inspiration for the record came from us being on tour and us growing up the last couple of years on the road – [which is] pretty much in the most unconventional way possible.” – Ned Russin

> Up-To-Date List of Music/Arts Sites Joining Us In Opposing SOPA/PIPA { HERE } > Commentary From Music Sites Blacked Out TODAY { HERE } > Cohesive List of Companies and Organizations Opposing SOPA/PIPA { HERE } Letter From The Editor Dear REDEFINE reader, I am writing this letter with the sincere hopes of convincing anyone involved in or inspired by the music, film and arts industries to join REDEFINE in taking a united stand against two bills that, if passed, may greatly restrict creative freedom as we know it. The possibility of government-sanctioned censorship of the internet is very, very near. On Tuesday, January 24th, 2012, Congress is set to vote on Stop Internet Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect-IP [...]

“Our overall album art concept is simple ~ each individual album has different art that’s unique and only YOU have it. So if we’ve given out thousands of these things, then that means we’ve made over 1000 different art pieces, and those different people are the owners of that.” - Sam Chown

Bear In Heaven are back, and with a new joint record release deal with Hometapes (their former label) and Dead Oceans! In this post: a stream of their latest single, “The Reflection Of You,” and a link to their site where you can listen to “Noon Moon,” played not at its normal speed, but at a duration that stretches it into infinity and turns a normal single into a drone track. (They have quite the artistic statement about it; read below.) Dead Oceans and Hometapes will partner to co-release I Love You It’s Cool on April 3, 2012. Much better known in Europe than in the US (thanks in large part to John Peel), France’s Herman Dune have been around for over a decade, busy pioneering the “anti-folk” movement that has had a mutually influential relationship with countless bands, from Belle & Sebastian to The Mountain Goats to even Jens Lekman. This album is quite jolly; title track “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” is a toe-tapping opener reminiscent of Belle & Sebastian’s “Judy and the Dream of Horses,” and the song “Shadow of a Doubt” is impossible to listen to without bouncing around a little, especially during those surf rock guitar riffs. Generally sunny, Herman Dune is equally primed for the stereo systems of our parents and [...]

Oh, Zechs Marquise, purveyors of fine progressive instrumental music. The music of Zechs Marquise specializes in taking listeners on multi-instrumental journeys laden with unpredictable twists and turns, and this video does just that as well. Viewers are invited to participate in a trip to the “Everlasting Beacon Of Light” — a space filled with gangsters, sand dunes, animal heads, and whatever else they decide to throw your way. Directed by The 90′s. Guest appearances by Teri Gender Bender and Matthew Embree.

Dustin Wong announced a project today that is right up REDEFINE’s alley and recalls another project Golden Rule Gallery had last year, where a select group of people were allowed to sleep overnight in the gallery. They were then invited to write down their dreams so that filmmaker Alexis Powell could then adapt them to video. Well, Thrill Jockey Records’ Dustin Wong is now doing the same thing, but with music. ABOUT THE SAY YOUR DREAM, CREATE A SOUND PROJECT At the very bottom, below the video, you can see a quick glimpse of Wong’s artistic process, as lifted from Thrill Jockey’s website. You can pre-order the album here. Here is Dustin’s SoundCloud page, where you can submit your dream. [...]

When I first listened to Cloud Control’s latest LP, Bliss Release, “Ghost Story” struck me immediately. As it isn’t an album single, I thought might be a good idea to feature it from a Lyrical Analysis standpoint. I offered up my interpretation of the lyrics to see if I hit or missed the mark, and vocalist and Alister Wright responded. Evidently, I missed the mark. Big time. See all articles related to Ghosts & Spirits Conclusions that I can now draw about “Ghost Story”: 1) It might sound and feel dramatic, but it’s probably not what you’d think because it’s actually rooted in humor (this is the band’s opinion); 2) It’s probably the best track on the album (this is [...]

Watching Colin Stetson live is an absolute jaw-dropping marvel. With his circular breathing technique, Colin Stetson crafts soundscapes with a bass saxophone like no one else can. This video for “Those Who Didn’t Run” is quite simple, comprised of little more than a few components. Trees, mountains, smoke, waterfalls, and most importantly, the moon, are woven together in brilliant succession with the music to create a synesthetic delight. Directed by Isaac Gale Edited by JoLynn Garnes and Isaac Gale 2011
