RACHEL HELM .
redefine writer since 2008
Rachel likes stuff that bleeds deep pigments, stuff that glitters like a Neil Gaiman novel or a Regina Spektor song. She lives where there are a lot of wheat fields and closed-minded people, but that's okay because the internet makes the rest of the world easier to touch. Most of her time these days is spent writing silly things and playing with little kids. She likes adventures. She collects stories. If you ask, she’ll tell you anything.
favorite musicians:
Rasputina, Jason Webley, Dark Dark Dark, The Blow, Harvey Danger, Jenny Lewis, Vermilion Lies, Thao, Mirah, Tom Waits

KARLA HERNANDEZ .
redefine writer since 2007
Karla is a curious type of individual who loves being around creative people and asking lots of questions. As someone who grew up in a small rural town in Nothern California (population: 252!), she is accustomed to relying on the power of the Internet and the music scenes of smaller cities to learn about new, innovative artists. She has been involved with independent community and college radio since 2004 and enjoys listening to new bands and flipping through old vinyl record collections. She currently hosts a show called
It's Getting Giddy In Here on KDVS 90.3FM in Davis and online at
kdvs.org.

RACHEL HELM .
redefine writer since 2008
Rachel DJs and helps manage her college radio station, in a town where there are a lot of wheat fields and closed-minded people. But that's okay because she's got good music all around. Most of her time these days is spent writing silly things and playing with little kids. She likes adventures. She collects stories. If you ask, she’ll tell you anything. One day, she's going to be a teacher.
favorite musicians:
Tom Waits, Rasputina, Elvis Perkins, Dark Dark Dark, Jenny Lewis, Vermillion Lies, Jason Webley, The Blow, Harvey Danger

JOHN GILLANDERS .
redefine writer since 2006
John blew his own mind experimenting with psychedelic drugs in his late teens and early twenties. The ontological shock created by these psychic discoveries lead him to an interest in esoteric spiritual pursuits such as astral travel and chaos magick. When he has free time, he sings and plays guitar in a band called
Black Science, and finished his first novel, entitled
Entrails Of The Multiverse, in 2008.
VIVIAN HUA .
redefine editor-in-chief since 2004
Vivian is a former Californian and New Jerseyan who relocated to the Pacific Northwest in 2001 and will never look back! She started REDEFINE in 2004 as a general interest magazine, but it soon transformed to fill a niche of covering lesser-known musicians and artists. Her interests include writing and all things music and art-related, of course, but also include traveling every and any chance she gets, taking photos of crappy old buildings and things that are falling apart, doing miscellaneous social experiments, wandering aimlessly, and talking to any and all strangers who want to chat (the stranger, the better).
favorite musicians:
Neon Blonde, The Valley Arena, The Pale Pacific, Hail Social, The Helio Sequence, Tegan And Sara, Brand New... well, it's changing all the time, anyway; only the top two have remained constant in the past few years.
favorite artists:
Drahomira, Elena Kalis, Michael Michael Motorcycle, Skinner, Chandra Bocci

JUDY NELSON .
redefine writer since 2008
Judy lives in Brooklyn, New York, where she has the luxury of walking to work and enjoying the best bagels known to man. Formerly a music industry hack, Judy decided to take a break and work in the design industry for awhile. She still misses her roots and thus happily writes for Redefine. She enjoys exploring Brooklyn, traveling, record shopping, good indie radio, finding the best vegetarian food around, and playing with her two kittens (one older and slightly grumpier than the other).
favorite musicians:
Talking Heads, Beck, Sleater-Kinney, Air, Q & Not U, Pinback, Pixies, Gang of Four, Guided by Voices, Prefuse 73

KATIE NGUYEN .
redefine writer since 2008
Katie is a student at Seattle University pursuing a degree in Business Management. While growing up near the Seattle area, she quickly developed an interest in the local Seattle music scene. In high school, Katie attended local shows a few times a month, which later led to her booking and promotions internship at the Kirkland Teen Union Building. Having watched all of her favorite bands grow up to have such successful careers, it inspired her to pursue a possible career in the music industry. For now, she's going to finish school first and worry about all of that later. In her free time, Katie enjoys attending concerts, dancing to her favorite bands, photography, retail therapy, eating delicious food and
managing her blog.
favorite musicians:
Jack's Mannequin, Girl Talk, The Rocket Summer, John Mayer, Paramore, Death Cab For Cutie

She has been writing for Redefine since 2004 but also freelances for Shut Up! Magazine and AbsolutePunk.net. She enjoys horror movies, dancing, baking/cooking, the smell of peppermint, partying, '57 Thunderbirds, and Marilyn Monroe. She DJs a radio show, In The Pit, every Thursday night. She was featured in the May and June issues of Glamour Magazine as part of the company's new mini-webseries, "Tressed To Impress," in conjunction with Herbal Essences, on

EMILY SCOTT .
redefine writer since 2009
Emily is an avid lover of music and the arts. She grew up seeing music, art and cinema in Los Angeles before moving to Northern California. She received her Bachelor's and Master’s Degrees in English Literature from Humboldt State University and Sonoma State University. Along with literature, she is very interested in popular culture. Emily has been a presenter and member of the Popular Culture and American Culture Associations since 2006. Music, film and the fine arts are an area of great interest to her. Dada, surrealism, and other war influenced modern art genres have shaped her interest in the fine arts and her favorite painter is de Chirico. Regarding music, Emily's foundation is deeply rooted in classic rock and early metal, and these days she goes to a lot of metal and instrumental shows. She likes most forms of metal though she mostly appreciates doom, sludge, thrash and black metal.

PETER WOODBURN .
redefine writer since 2007
Peter is a music fiend. When he isn't spending his time searching for new music, perusing used bins at record stores, going to live shows, playing various instruments very poorly, or listening to music, he'll take the time to sit down and write about music. And when he isn't doing that, he is dabbling in the finer arts of Italian cooking, and the less fine arts of beer-making, wine-making, and eggnog-making (as well as consumption of all three). He was born and raised on punk and hardcore and has fought a battle his entire life to not only listen to the new and readily more palatable indie rock that seems to be all the rage now. He failed in this endeavor and now finds himself immersed in various instrumental post-rock/ambient soundscapes. He has an unhealthy obsession with classic Russian literature, and a very healthy obsession with zombie flicks.
favorite musicians:
ISIS, Good Riddance, Bane, Ted Leo and the Rx, The Clash, The Bouncing Souls, Refused, Explosions in the Sky

QICHEN ZHANG .
redefine writer since 2009
Qichen, despite harboring a penchant for experimental lo-fi, still thinks the acoustic guitar is the best accompaniment to any indie album. In her free time, Qichen photographs, travels, and blogs like a madman. She is currently a student in Boston.
favorite musicians:
Sondre Lerche, Kings of Convenience, Joy Division, Rachael Yamagata, and a whole slew of bizarre Chinese indie acts, such as My Little Airport.
favorite artists:
Rinko Kawauchi, a Japanese photographer.
