Secretly Canadian is an American independent record label based in Bloomington, Indiana. It was started in 1996 by Chris and Ben Swanson, Eric Weddle, and Jonathan Cargill, and is associated with sister labels Dead Oceans and Jagjaguwar. Chris Swanson also runs the Jagjaguwar label along with Darius Van Arman; the two labels had worked closely together before Jagajguwar’s offices moved to Bloomington to work alongside Secretly Canadian’s. In February, 2007, the partners behind Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar, along with Phil Waldorf, former label manager of Misra Records, announced a third sister label, Dead Oceans. The three labels share offices and staff in Bloomington, IN; however, they maintain distinct and separate aesthetic visions.

Secretly Canadian also has its own distribution arm, SC Distribution. It was founded in 1997 and currently distributes such labels as Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, Dead Oceans, Asthmatic Kitty, Brah Records, Hometapes, K Records, Lovepump United, Suicide Squeeze Records, Temporary Residence Ltd., and Western Vinyl.

Nite Jewel – One Second Of Love Music Video

Occult symbols aren’t taken too seriously in this video for Nite Jewel’s “One Second Of Love”, which combines dance (complete with floor moves) with a pop-and-locking, gyrating calavera-headed creature. At the breakdown, all glamour turns nasty, as in: a scantily-clad character straight out of a bounce video and black squid ink vomit. A well-orchestrated video...Read...

Gardens & Villa – “Spacetime” Music Video

Peer through crystal balls and tunnel through holes full of religious iconography, facepaint, starry lights, and animation. This video for “Spacetime” is reminiscent of some kind of cross between shamanistic rituals, voodoo magick, and goofball schtick, just like these metaphysical-minded chumbawumbas. Simultaneously playful and deep, Gardens & Villa are pretty much the best combination ever.

Akron/Family Live Show Review

Neumos Seattle, WA 2011 – 03/24 Going to see Akron/Family is an exercise: literally. Besides never knowing how the freak-folk-rock band is going to blast out the versions of their songs — maybe a bit softer here, a bit harder there — when the band came out to the Neumo’s crowd, multi-instrumentalist Seth Olinsky led...Read...

Nightlands – “All The Way” Music Video

With overdubs reminiscent of Imogen Heap, “All The Way” by Nightlands seems like a musical collage — layers and layers of the phrase, “All the way,” work with occasional sprinklings of notes. The video is similarly a low-budget collage, with faces morphing in and out of each other and very little in-between. Directed by Audrey...Read...
